World of Wine

Ancient Egypt

There are over 80 tombs in Egypt that have drawings depicting wine scenes. Many are in a state of disrepair. The tomb of Khaemweset, in the Valley of the Queens on the west bank of Luxor has a drawing that tells the story from start to finish of winemaking in ancient Egypt. Little is missing from the process as we know it today. Possibly we no longer use a goddess to pray for a good result, although I suspect there are conditions when many winemakers are on their knees in prayer when disaster strikes in the form of frost and hail etc.
